Students Champion Youth Welfare and Equality

In an era where youth voices are more critical than ever, students in Bhutan are stepping forward to advocate for youth welfare, gender equality, and comprehensive sexuality education. This movement was recently spotlighted during the Summer Youth Engagement Programme in the capital, a week-long initiative aimed at empowering young minds to shape policies that directly impact their lives. 🌟

The Power of Youth Advocacy 🔥

During the engagement programme, 57 students from 28 schools across Bhutan gathered to discuss and present their recommendations to Members of Parliament. This initiative, organized by the non-governmental organization RENEW, was designed to teach young participants about civic engagement, parliamentary processes, and youth rights.

Building Confidence and Civic Participation

The programme featured youth-led debates on pressing issues like cyberbullying and technology-facilitated violence. These activities provided students with the confidence to speak up and contribute to policy-making, rather than being passive recipients of government decisions. As Unish Ghalleay from Karma Academy, Paro expressed, "Making policies is not only for older people; it should also be based on youth because we are the ones building our future." ✨

Comprehensive Sexuality Education: More Than Just Reproductive Health

One of the programme's focal points was Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). As RENEW Youth Ambassador Sushil Rai highlighted, CSE is about equipping young people with accurate knowledge and life skills to make informed decisions. It encompasses vital topics such as consent, respect, gender equality, and healthy relationships, breaking down the stigma around discussing sexual and reproductive health.

A Broader Understanding of Human Rights

Participants also delved into discussions about human rights, with a focus on understanding the rights and responsibilities tied to sexuality education. Chimi Tshoki Yangden, a member of the Druk Adolescents’ Initiative on Sexual Awareness Network (DAISAN), noted the importance of advocating for these rights among peers to foster a more informed and vocal youth community.

The Role of RENEW in Empowering Youth

RENEW, known for its efforts in supporting youth development, plays a pivotal role in organizing such engagement programmes. By creating platforms for dialogue and learning, RENEW ensures that young people are not only informed and responsible but also active citizens capable of driving change. 💫

The Future of Youth-Led Initiatives

The success of the Summer Youth Engagement Programme underscores the potential of youth-led initiatives in shaping future policies. As young people continue to advocate for their rights and education, they pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.

Key Takeaways and Looking Forward

  1. Empowerment through Education: Comprehensive Sexuality Education is crucial for informed decision-making and promoting gender equality.
  2. Youth Participation in Policy-Making: Young people must be included in policy discussions to ensure their perspectives are represented.
  3. Ongoing Advocacy: Continued advocacy is essential to maintain momentum and achieve lasting change.

As Bhutan's youth continue to champion these causes, they not only contribute to their personal growth but also to the betterment of society as a whole. Their efforts exemplify the power of youth in driving significant social change, setting a precedent for future generations to follow. 🌍
