Youth Innovation Blossoms in Bumthang's Summer Program

In Bumthang, Bhutan, 30 enthusiastic students and out-of-school youth are steering their summer into a journey of innovation and learning. The week-long summer engagement programme, hosted by the RENEW Regional Centre, is a beacon of opportunity, blending technology, life skills, and comprehensive sexuality education. This initiative is designed to mold young minds into responsible and innovative leaders of tomorrow.

Harnessing Technology for Growth 🚀

At the heart of this program is the integration of technological education, a crucial component for today’s youth. Young participants, starting from the tender age of eight, gathered at Gangrithang Primary School to dive into the world of digital innovation. The curriculum covered essentials like coding, electronics, robotics, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

Building Future Innovators

The hands-on experience allowed these budding innovators to develop practical prototypes. An emergency alert device that communicates with mobile phones and a sensor-based sanitary pad dispenser are just a few of the innovative projects that emerged. Such activities not only impart technical knowledge but also encourage perseverance and creativity.

"In six days, we managed to make all these by using STEM. Not only did we learn technical and scientific skills, but we also learned to keep trying even when things do not work," shared Khenrab Wangchuk, a student from Wangduechhoeling LSS.

While technology was a significant focus, the program also emphasized life skills and comprehensive sexuality education. These sessions were instrumental in building confidence, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills among participants. "We are trying to make a slim watch, which serves two purposes: to check the time and, at the same time, when we press a button, it can provide an emergency alert through it," she explained, demonstrating the program's impact on her innovative aspirations.
