Dorjilung Hydropower Access Roads Near Completion

The Dorjilung hydropower project, a monumental endeavor in Bhutan's energy sector, is making significant strides as its access roads and bridges edge closer to completion. As of now, 75% of the required infrastructure is in place, paving the way for further advancements in the construction of this ambitious project.

Progress in Infrastructure Development ๐Ÿšง

The construction of access roads and bridges is being executed by two prominent firms, M/s KD Builders Pvt Ltd and M/s Chimmi RD Construction Pvt Ltd, both of which were contracted on July 28, 2025. The firms have been tasked with developing 29.1 kilometers of roads and two major bridges over the Kurichhu River, a critical step for the Dorjilung hydropower project. These infrastructural components are essential for facilitating the transportation of materials and equipment to the project site.

Key Areas of Construction ๐ŸŒ

The road work is concentrated in the regions of Rewan, Banjar, Palangphu, and Kurizampa. These areas are strategically important for ensuring seamless connectivity and efficient logistical operations. The completion of these roads will not only aid in the construction process but will also improve local infrastructure, benefiting surrounding communities.

A Boost to Bhutan's Energy Sector โšก

Located on the Kurichhu River in eastern Bhutan, the Dorjilung hydropower project is set to be a game-changer for the nation's energy landscape. With an anticipated generation capacity of over 4,500 gigawatt-hours annually, the project will increase Bhutan's energy production by 40% and enhance energy exports by 42%. This aligns with Bhutan's vision of becoming a major exporter of clean energy in the region.

Economic Impact and Job Creation ๐Ÿ’ผ

The economic implications of the Dorjilung project are substantial. It is expected to boost Bhutan's GDP by approximately 2.4% and generate around 5,000 jobs during its operational phase. Such economic growth is vital for Bhutan, offering opportunities for local employment and fostering economic development in the region.

Strategic Partnerships ๐Ÿค

The project is being developed as a joint venture between Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and India's Tata Power, with DGPC holding a 60% stake and Tata Power 40%. This collaboration underscores the significance of cross-border partnerships in advancing Bhutan's infrastructure and energy capabilities.

Pre-Construction Phase and Future Developments ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

The pre-construction phase commenced on April 10, 2026, following an agreement signed on April 6. It is slated to conclude by February 2027. Key players in this phase include Patel Engineering Limited from India and Rigsar Construction Private Limited. Patel Engineering is responsible for constructing diversion tunnels and a highway road tunnel, while Rigsar Construction will focus on the headrace tunnel and associated infrastructure.

The civil works packages are anticipated to be awarded in the third quarter of 2026, with construction beginning in the fourth quarter. The entire project is projected to be completed by 2031.

Future Outlook ๐ŸŒŸ

As Bhutan continues to harness its hydropower potential, the Dorjilung project stands as a testament to the country's commitment to sustainable energy and economic growth. Upon completion, it will not only bolster Bhutan's energy independence but also position it as a pivotal player in the regional energy market.

The project's progress is a beacon of hope for economic development, job creation, and environmental sustainability. Stakeholders and the Bhutanese public eagerly await the project's next phases, which promise to bring substantial benefits to the nation and beyond.
