BTF Expands in GMC: Boosting Southern Conservation

🌿 Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTF) has taken a significant step forward in its mission to enhance environmental stewardship by opening a new office in Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). This move is poised to bolster conservation efforts across southern Bhutan.

Strengthening Support in the South 🌍

The inauguration of BTF's regional office in GMC coincides with the 36th Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, marking a milestone in Bhutan’s environmental journey. For the first time, BTF extends its presence beyond Thimphu, aiming to foster greater access to conservation financing and technical support for southern communities.

Why Gelephu Mindfulness City? 🤔

Gelephu Mindfulness City, or GMC, emerged as an ideal location for BTF’s expansion. As a burgeoning center of sustainability and spirituality, GMC aligns perfectly with BTF’s mission to promote environmental conservation. Dr. Karma Tshering, Managing Director of BTF, emphasized the strategic importance of this location, stating, "For some time, we had planned to establish an office in the east or south to improve outreach. When GMC emerged, we felt there could be no better place."

Expanding Conservation Impact 📈

BTF's new office will function as a vital gateway for local communities, civil society organizations, and project proponents to access BTF’s services. The organization operates a proposal-based grant system, disbursing close to USD 2 million annually to support projects in conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Key Initiatives in the Southern Region 🚀

Already, BTF is supporting several initiatives in the GMC landscape, including:

  • Bhutan Regenerative Engineered Timber Solutions (BRETS Bhutan)
  • Ecotourism development in Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and Royal Manas National Park
  • The Elephant Eyes project, focusing on human-elephant coexistence

These projects underscore BTF’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and improving human-wildlife coexistence in the region.

A Legacy of Environmental Stewardship 🌳

Founded in 1991 under the visionary guidance of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, BTF holds the distinction of being the world’s first environmental trust fund. The establishment of the GMC office is not merely a new initiative; it reflects Bhutan’s enduring legacy of environmental conservation.

Future Prospects and Community Engagement 🔭

The presence of BTF in GMC is expected to significantly enhance collaboration with environmental partners and encourage the active participation of southern communities in environmental projects. "Having an office here will make it easier for people to make inquiries, seek guidance and access our services," Dr. Tshering noted, highlighting the anticipated benefits for dzongkhags like Sarpang and Zhemgang.

Conclusion: A Sustainable Future Awaits 🌟

As BTF continues to expand its reach, the impact on Bhutan’s southern region promises to be profound, fostering a culture of sustainability and conservation. The new GMC office is set to become a hub of environmental activity, supporting projects that not only preserve the natural beauty of Bhutan but also enhance the quality of life for its people.

Stay tuned as Bhutan leads the way in environmental stewardship, demonstrating that sustainable development is not just a goal but a legacy to build upon.
