Say Aa-Pow and Boost Bhutan's Dairy Economy

In the heart of Gelephu, a delightful exclamation in Dzongkha, "Aa-Pow," signifies something so delicious that it leaves one speechless. This expression now lends its name to a unique venture that supports local farmers and invigorates the economy.

The Journey from Farm to Freezer ๐Ÿฆ

Every scoop of Aa-Pow ice cream begins its journey in the early morning hours at the dairies of Gelephu Gewog and Samtenling. Farmers diligently collect fresh milk, which is promptly gathered by the cooperative, ensuring that not a drop goes to waste. This initiative has drastically evolved the dairy value chain, transforming surplus milk into delectable ice cream and generating consistent income for local farmers.

Fresh milk collection at a local farm

Historically, surplus milk was limited to cheese and butter production, often leading to wastage. However, with the establishment of the Aa-Pow processing plant, funded by a Nu 15.12 million investment from the Sarpang Dzongkhag Administration and other local bodies, the landscape has changed. The plant, inaugurated in August 2022, stands as a beacon of innovation and resilience.

Overcoming Early Challenges ๐ŸŒŸ

The initial days at the Aa-Pow plant were not without hurdles. The ice cream's texture and taste initially fell short of expectations, struggling to compete with imported brands. Yet, through persistent trial and error, the cooperative developed a product that is soft, creamy, and distinctly Bhutanese.

Today, Aa-Pow ice cream is available in various sizes, from individual cups to family packs, and has sold over 11,827 units in recent months, generating substantial revenue.

Empowering Farmers and Youth ๐ŸŒพ

The success of Aa-Pow goes beyond just ice cream. It represents a sustainable model that supports 134 cooperative members, owning over 400 milking cows, and ensures steady income for farmers. With ten milk collection centers, the cooperative efficiently manages to supply fresh milk to local markets and beyond, even reaching Dadgari in India.

Local youth involved in ice cream processing

Furthermore, the plant provides employment to local youth, offering stable jobs and fostering economic growth in Gelephu. As Gelephu transforms into a hub of activity with events and volunteer programs, Aa-Pow is strategically positioned to capitalize on increased demand.

A Symbol of Local Pride and Quality โœจ

The story of Aa-Pow is more than just about ice cream; it's about a community's commitment to quality and local production. As local consumers increasingly favor products like Aa-Pow, the cooperative continues to expand its market presence across the Sarpang district.

The Future of Aa-Pow and Community Impact ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Looking ahead, the Aa-Pow plant is part of the Renewable Natural Resources Jobs Project, illustrating how cooperative enterprises can thrive through value addition. Plans for better branding and diversification are underway to maximize the plant's potential.

Ultimately, Aa-Pow ensures that every farmer's effort is rewarded, providing jobs for local youth and turning a simple Dzongkha expression into a symbol of community resilience and economic empowerment. So, when someone savors Aa-Pow ice cream and exclaims, "Aa-pow, zhim bay mey!", they are celebrating a community's triumph over adversity and the sweet taste of success.
