Lingzhi LSS Resolves Staff Quarter Shortage

The remote highlands of Lingzhi, Bhutan, have recently witnessed significant strides in addressing the staff quarter shortage at Lingzhi Lower Secondary School (LSS). Located in Thimphu Dzongkhag, Lingzhi LSS had been experiencing accommodation challenges exacerbated by the influx of new staff members. However, officials now report that the situation has largely been resolved, much to the relief of the school community.

🏫 Addressing the Accommodation Challenge

Upon the arrival of additional staff, including a warden, matron, and caregiver, the school faced a temporary shortage. For approximately ten days, some staff members had to share a single room. Principal Tshering assured that there was no dire situation, and the Lingzhi Dungkhag Administration stepped in to provide a vacant quarter, mitigating the issue.

The Thimphu Dzongkhag Chief Education Officer, Tshering Dorji, explained that many staff members opted for shared accommodations since their families reside in Thimphu. This arrangement, while less than ideal, offers a sense of companionship in the isolated highland setting.

📈 Infrastructure Developments: A Step Forward

Lingzhi LSS is not only addressing accommodation issues but also undergoing significant infrastructure improvements. Historically, the school lacked adequate facilities, with students attending classes in tents. The education ministry, along with the dzongkhag administration, has since provided essential support.

Ongoing projects include maintenance of existing quarters, a new toilet construction, dining hall repairs, and general retrofitting works. These enhancements are partly funded by a generous Nu 6.4 million contribution from the World Bank, aimed at creating a more conducive learning environment.

In a bid to further improve the school's infrastructure, plans are in place to construct a new kitchen and store, as well as to install solar power systems. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive master plan developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Skill Development, the dzongkhag administration, and the Bhutan Foundation.

The master plan carefully considers Lingzhi's unique climate conditions, ensuring that future developments are sustainable and effective in addressing the school's needs. With these efforts, the school aims to enhance its facilities while respecting the local environment.

Lingzhi LSS serves a small student body of 59 pupils, ranging from pre-primary to Class VIII, supported by 12 teaching and 8 non-teaching staff. The academic calendar runs from mid-March to mid-November, slightly shorter than other Bhutanese schools due to Lingzhi's challenging weather conditions.

The school's location, nestled at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,000 meters, presents unique challenges and opportunities. Despite its remote setting, the school is committed to providing quality education and professional development for its teachers, fostering a resilient community in Bhutan's highlands.
