TourismBridging the Digital Gap in Bhutan's Hotel Industry

In today's digital age, the journey of planning a trip often begins online. From browsing hotel reviews to securing bookings, a strong digital presence is crucial for the hospitality industry. Yet, Bhutan's recent Digital Readiness Programme highlights significant gaps in this area, particularly among three-star hotels.
Unveiling the Digital Challenges ๐
The Digital Readiness Programme, a comprehensive three-month initiative, revealed that many Bhutanese hotels struggle with their online platforms. A startling finding was that numerous hotels lacked control over their Google listings, social media accounts, and online travel agency profiles. This lack of control often stems from accounts created by former employees or external agencies, leaving hotel owners with limited access.
The Impact of Poor Digital Management
Without claiming their Google listings, hotels face challenges in responding to reviews and updating critical information. "If someone searches for a hotel online and finds no recent reviews or updated photos, the hotel is less likely to appear prominently on Google," explains Dechen Tshomo, Founder of Vend Solutions.
The situation is dire in regions like Bumthang, where tourists might struggle to find accurate hotel information online. Ugyen Dorji, Board Director at the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Bhutan, points out that outdated contact details and unresponsive social media accounts further hinder potential bookings.

Training for Digital Excellence ๐
Recognizing these challenges, the programme trained owners and managers of 184 Department of Tourism-certified three-star hotels. The focus was on digital marketing, IT readiness, and standard operating procedures. As a result, 46 Instagram pages and eight Facebook pages were newly created. Additionally, 163 Google business profiles were optimized, and 47 hotels were registered on leading online travel platforms.
Optimizing Digital Profiles
Somita Rai, Sales and Marketing Manager at aBit Private Limited, underscores the importance of claiming and optimizing Google profiles. "Updating information and responding to reviews on platforms like Google and TripAdvisor can significantly enhance a hotel's online visibility," she notes.
Broader Industry Trends ๐
Globally, the hospitality industry is rapidly embracing digital transformation. A study by Statista indicates that 82% of all travel bookings in 2023 were made online via a mobile app or website. This trend underscores the need for hotels to not only be present online but to actively manage their digital footprints.
The Future of Digital Readiness
The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Bhutan, in collaboration with aBit Private Limited and Vend Solutions Bhutan, spearheaded the programme with support from the Tourism Department. As digital platforms become increasingly pivotal in travel planning, maintaining an effective online presence is paramount for competitive advantage.
Conclusion: Embracing the Digital Shift โจ
The Digital Readiness Programme serves as a wake-up call for Bhutan's hospitality sector. To thrive in an increasingly digital world, hotels must prioritize managing and maintaining their online presence. Looking forward, continuous training and adaptation to digital trends will be crucial for sustained success.
In conclusion, as Bhutan seeks to boost its tourism industry, bridging the digital gap is essential. Hotels that embrace this change can look forward to enhanced visibility, increased bookings, and a stronger foothold in the digital marketplace.
