The picturesque town of Sakteng, perched nearly 3,000 meters above sea level in Trashigang, Bhutan, is known for its chilly climate. For years, the students at Sakteng Middle Secondary School braved the harsh winters using traditional firewood-fed Bukharis to heat their classrooms. The school has introduced a modern heating system that marks a departure from the labor-intensive and environmentally taxing firewood method. The new system eliminates the issues of smoke distraction and fire hazards associated with Bukharis.

Students have already noticed the difference. "While using Bukhari, some parts of the wooden planks were damaged due to fire," recalls Pema Yangdon, a student. "During classes, the smoke from the fire often distracted students, making it difficult to concentrate properly. But with the new heating system, we feel warm and focus better on our studies."

Before the renovation, Sakteng Middle Secondary School consumed around nine truckloads of firewood annually. This traditional method was not only costly but also unsustainable. Sonam Tenzin, another student, highlights the impact of the renovation: "Being in a remote area, our classrooms earlier had wooden plank flooring. But after the planks were damaged, they were replaced with cement flooring, which became very cold during winter. Now, our classrooms have thick floor mats, and this has made us stay warm."
