Irrigation Revives Farmland in Chagsakhar

A New Dawn for Chagsakhar Agriculture 🌾

In the picturesque landscape of Chagsakhar Gewog, Mongar, a transformative project has breathed new life into the agricultural community. The construction of the Gangri–Kadam Irrigation Channel, valued at Nu 35.123 million, has revived 48 acres of previously fallow farmland. This initiative is a beacon of hope for the 130 households in the Doongsingma–Pam Chiwog, who have struggled with water scarcity for over a decade.

Overcoming Past Challenges ⚠️

For years, farmers in this region were burdened with an unreliable water supply, relying on an earthen irrigation canal prone to frequent leakages. The labor-intensive task of maintaining these channels often ended in disappointment. Farmers like Rinzin Dorji recall the struggles of relying on an unreliable drainage system. "Heavy rains often clogged the channel with debris," he shares, highlighting the challenges faced.

Community Impact and Economic Revival 💪

The new irrigation channel has not only restored paddy cultivation but also rekindled interest in crop diversity. Farmers are now optimistic about reviving orange orchards and expanding vegetable cultivation. Karma Dorji, another local farmer, emphasizes the newfound potential for growing potatoes and chillies, which were previously neglected due to water shortages.

Addressing Broader Challenges 🌍

While the irrigation channel has addressed water scarcity, human-wildlife conflict remains a significant hurdle. Many fields were abandoned due to wildlife intrusions. Farmers are advocating for chain-link fencing to protect their crops and ensure sustainable cultivation.

A Community-Driven Solution 🎯

The project, supported by the Government of India and implemented by the Department of Irrigation Development, is now managed by the local community. Each landowner contributes Nu 10 per decimal of land for maintenance. This collective effort ensures the channel's sustainability and empowers the community to take ownership of their agricultural future.

Looking Forward: A Promising Future 🌟

With the Gangri–Kadam Irrigation Channel now operational, Chagsakhar's farmers can look forward to improved agricultural productivity and greater food self-sufficiency. The initiative not only strengthens the local economy but also reinforces Bhutan's commitment to sustainable development. As landowners like Tshewang Norbu hope, "The re-cultivated land could help us achieve self-sufficiency and better support our families."
