Bhutan's Neurosurgery Milestone: A Regional Seat Secured

Bhutan's Leap into the Neurosurgical Arena ๐ŸŒŸ

In a historic achievement, Bhutan has secured a coveted seat in the Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons (AASNS), marking a significant milestone for the country's burgeoning medical capabilities. This development reflects the growing international recognition of Bhutan's strides in neurosurgery, as the nation joins the ranks of the regional medical fraternity. The achievement is underscored by the successful completion of over 2,000 brain and spine surgeries at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital. This progress has greatly reduced the nation's dependence on overseas medical referrals.

Recognition on the Global Stage ๐ŸŒ

During the 18th Asian Australasian Congress of Neurological Surgeons held in Manila, Bhutan was formally inducted alongside Iran, expanding the AASNS to 30 member societies. The theme of this year's congress, 'Unity in Neurosurgery: Linking Asia from Local to Global,' highlights the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing across borders.

Overcoming Challenges: Bhutan's Unique Position

Typically, AASNS membership requires a national neurological society and a minimum of 10 practising neurosurgeons. Bhutan, however, has only three neurosurgeons and no formal society. Despite these limitations, the country's remarkable progress has been recognized, allowing it to join the esteemed group.

The Journey to Self-Reliance ๐Ÿฅ

Previously, Bhutanese patients requiring neurosurgical care had to be referred to hospitals in India, resulting in substantial financial burdens and emotional stress for families. Today, the neurosurgical unit at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital manages nearly 90% of neurosurgical cases locally. The unit offers services across nine sub-specialties, including:

  • Neuro-trauma
  • Skull base surgery
  • Epilepsy surgery
  • Cerebrovascular surgery
  • Spine surgery
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Pain surgery
  • Functional neurosurgery
  • Paediatric neurosurgery

However, around 400 patients in the last five years still required overseas referrals for specialized procedures like epilepsy mapping and neuro-intervention.

Future Prospects and Opportunities ๐Ÿš€

Membership in the AASNS is expected to open doors to advanced training, fellowships, and clinical resources. Bhutan will now have voting rights to influence regional neurosurgical policies and advocate for low- and middle-income countries. This membership will also enhance telemedicine collaborations with institutions in Japan and Australia, and provide opportunities for hosting workshops and specialist training in Bhutan.

A Vision for Improved Healthcare

Dr. Sonam Jamtsho, a key figure in this achievement and the first Bhutanese representative on the AASNS Executive Committee, emphasized the significance of this milestone: "By joining the AASNS, we are breaking down the walls of geographical isolation. We are connecting our young, growing medical workforce directly to a vast ocean of international expertise, advanced clinical training, and cutting-edge research."

Conclusion: A New Era for Bhutanese Healthcare ๐ŸŒŸ

This landmark achievement heralds a new era for neurosurgery in Bhutan, transforming it from an isolated practice to an integral part of the global neurosurgical community. With the ability to provide world-class care at home, Bhutanese patients no longer need to cross borders for life-saving neurological services. The journey of Bhutan's neurosurgical unit is a testament to the nation's determination and resilience, paving the way for a brighter healthcare future.
