Embracing Innovation in Bhutan π‘
In a bold move reshaping Bhutan's entrepreneurial landscape, the Pelsung Innovation Lab is pioneering a new approach. By prioritizing problem-solving over traditional business models, the Lab seeks to cultivate a generation of innovators capable of tackling the country's most pressing challenges.
A Fresh Approach to Entrepreneurship π
Traditional entrepreneurship programs often focus on developing business ideas and securing financial backing. The Pelsung Innovation Lab, however, begins by identifying individuals with exceptional problem-solving skills. This marks a significant departure from conventional methods, emphasizing the importance of a mindset geared towards innovation.
The Selection Process π
Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process where they're evaluated based on their ability to tackle complex problems, not just their qualifications or communication abilities. Once selected, these 'Pelsups'βas they're knownβcollaborate with government agencies and private organizations to address real-world issues.
Collaborations and Projects π€
Currently, the Lab is working closely with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, among others. A prominent project titled "The New Principles of Bhutanese Food," led by Pelsup Silas Dhital, aims to strengthen food identity and self-sufficiency. This initiative is part of the country's broader 10x strategy on food self-sufficiency, aligning with the principles of Gross National Happiness.
Reviving Bhutanese Cuisine π²
The project has identified 35 crops and livestock commodities of nutritional and cultural importance. It seeks to shift dietary habits back to locally produced foods, elevating Brand Bhutan by placing traditional cuisine at its core. This involves collaboration with stakeholders like the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority and the World Food Programme.
Tackling Forest Fires π³π₯
Another innovative project from the Lab addresses the challenge of forest fires in Bhutan. Pelsup Rangjung Dorji, a biotechnology graduate, is developing a fire-retardant slurry. This solution, currently in testing, aims to provide a more efficient means of slowing fire spread, using locally processed materials.
Building Future Leaders π
Participants in the Lab receive six-month contracts, mentorship, and venture-building support to refine their solutions. The program focuses on developing strategic thinking, enhancing problem-solving skills, and improving the ability to communicate complex ideas.
Measuring Success π
The success of the Pelsung Innovation Lab will be measured by the viable ventures that emerge and the lasting impact these young innovators have on their communities. As His Majesty prepares the Gelephu Mindfulness City for the youth, it is their responsibility to inherit and elevate this vision.
Conclusion: A New Era of Innovation π
The Pelsung Innovation Lab represents a paradigm shift in fostering entrepreneurship within Bhutan. By focusing on problem-solvers, the Lab is not just preparing the youth for emerging opportunities but is also ensuring that they are equipped to lead Bhutan into a future defined by innovation and sustainability.
