SportsNational Bodybuilding Boom: Record Participation

The National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship 2026, held at the iconic Clock Tower Square in Thimphu, has seen an unprecedented surge in participation ๐. This year's event attracted over 30 athletes, a significant increase from previous years, and showcased a growing passion for bodybuilding among Bhutan's youth.
Rising Stars in Bodybuilding ๐
One of the most notable trends this year was the tripling of contestants in the men's junior bodybuilding category. This increase reflects a broader interest in fitness and bodybuilding among younger generations in Bhutan. Six athletes, aged 18 to 21, took part, compared to just two last year.
19-year-old Dorji Gyeltshen emerged victorious in this category. Currently training in Thimphu, Dorji recently earned a bronze medal at the 16th South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships. His dedication and hard work were rewarded with a cash prize of 50,000 ngultrum.

Inspiring Journeys and Future Plans ๐
Dorji shared his aspirations for the future: "Next year as well, I am planning to participate and hope to perform even better. I am still young and have many thoughts in mind."
Karma Lhendup and Sherab Kuenden Jamtsho secured silver and bronze, respectively, while Bipul Pradhan finished fourth. Among the fresh talents was Nima Tandin, a 19-year-old from Wangdue Phodrang. Despite limited access to training facilities, Nima's perseverance led him to a fifth-place finish.
Nima expressed, "Our life journey is not always smooth. But with determination and discipline, we can achieve great things and make our families proud."

Understanding the Growth Trend ๐
According to Sonam Tobgay, General Secretary of the Bhutan Bodybuilding Association, increased awareness of fitness, improved access to training facilities, and exposure to regional competitions are key factors driving this growth.
"Every year, the number of participants is increasing, not only in junior bodybuilding but in all categories," said Sonam Tobgay. This enthusiasm is evident across various categories, not just the junior division.
The Quest for Mr Bhutan ๐ช
In the men's open bodybuilding category, Thinley Dorji retained his title as Mr Bhutan 2026. Competing against eight other athletes, Thinley's performance was nothing short of exceptional, earning him his second title since 2024. Alongside the trophy, he received a cash prize of USD 5,000.
"I would like to thank all the Bhutanese who came here to support us," Thinley said. "When we have supporters, it motivates us."
