Japan and Bhutan: A Friendship at Forty

July 13, 2026·3 min read

Reflecting on Four Decades of Diplomatic Ties 🌏

Reaching the age of forty often symbolizes maturity and clarity. In Japan, it is an age when one is considered free from confusion, equipped with experience and confidence. This year marks the fortieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Bhutan, a friendship that has matured gracefully over the decades.

A Journey of Nostalgia and Progress 🎌✨

For many Japanese, Bhutan evokes feelings of nostalgia. It is a land where the chime of temple bells, communal family dinners, and a lifestyle that prioritizes community over haste resonate deeply. Bhutan's rich traditions and natural beauty remind many of a simpler, more harmonious way of life.

However, Bhutan is not trapped in its past. Under the leadership of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bhutan is embracing modern reforms while preserving its cultural identity. Initiatives like the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) exemplify Bhutan's commitment to innovation and sustainability without compromising its values. This balance of tradition and progress offers a valuable lesson for the world, including Japan.

The Roots of Mutual Learning 🌱

The relationship between Japan and Bhutan is steeped in mutual learning. Long before formal diplomatic ties were established, figures like Dasho Keiji Nishioka played pivotal roles in Bhutan's agricultural development through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). His work in land reclamation and crop improvement laid the groundwork for ongoing collaboration.

Sports, too, have become a bridge for cultural exchange. Both nations are in the nascent stages of developing cricket, providing a unique opportunity to foster youth exchanges and deepen understanding through this shared journey.

A Partnership Built on Trust and Compassion 🤝❤️

The bond between Japan and Bhutan is not just about mutual learning; it is also about enduring warmth and compassion. The visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Bhutan to Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 left a profound impact on the Japanese people. Their expressions of solidarity reinforced the deep affection between the nations.

This sentiment is reciprocated by Bhutanese citizens, who hold great respect for Japan's technological prowess and work ethic. During my visit to Royal Thimphu College, I witnessed students' eagerness to learn about Japanese culture, further solidifying the deep-rooted admiration and respect between our countries.

Looking Forward to a Bright Future 🌟

As we celebrate this milestone, events like "Bhutan–Japan Week" highlight our shared journey and future aspirations. Politically, there is a growing dialogue on regional cooperation and the evolving international order, particularly Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy. Bhutan's role in enhancing connectivity and sustainable growth within this framework presents new avenues for collaboration.

Economically, there is potential for sustainable investments that align with Bhutan's long-term development goals, supported by initiatives like the GMC.

Conclusion: A Relationship Defined by Clarity and Trust 🛤️✨

As Japan and Bhutan commemorate forty years of friendship, the clarity and trust that define this relationship are stronger than ever. This partnership is poised to continue flourishing, with both nations committed to walking together as trusted friends for many decades to come.
