Children Embrace Play through Football Fun

A Day of Joy and Learning ⚽

In a vibrant celebration of the International Day of Play, more than 200 children gathered at the Changlimithang Stadium for a day dedicated to fun and learning through football. The event brought together children from various backgrounds, including nuns, monks, and children with disabilities, highlighting the universal language of play.

Football, a sport that transcends barriers, was the perfect choice for this celebration. It underscored the importance of play in fostering physical health, social skills, and cognitive abilities among children. As Minister of Education and Skills Development Yeezang De Thapa aptly noted, play is a gift that brings joy, sharpens minds, and strengthens friendships.

The Importance of Play in Child Development 🌟

Play is not just about fun—it's a critical component of child development. Activities like football help children learn teamwork, creativity, confidence, resilience, respect, and discipline. These skills are invaluable and contribute to a child's overall growth.

Recent data reveal a concerning trend: only 23% of adolescents in Bhutan meet the recommended levels of physical activity. The Nourishing Bhutan report indicates that nearly four out of five adolescents aged 13–17 are insufficiently active, with many spending over three hours daily on sedentary activities. This inactivity poses risks of obesity and non-communicable diseases.

Overcoming Challenges Through Play 🏃‍♀️

Limited access to safe play areas and increasing screen time are significant barriers to physical activity among Bhutanese youth. The National Health Survey 2023 highlights that young people aged 15–24 are particularly inactive, especially students.

During the event, Tshering Lham from Draktsho Vocational Training Centre expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in such activities. Similarly, Thinley Dhendup Gyeltshen from Bhutan Football Academy shared how training alongside children with disabilities enhanced his skills and understanding.

The Role of Football in Shaping Futures ⚽

Football's role in child development cannot be overstated. Ugen Tsechup, President of the Bhutan Football Federation, emphasized that every footballer's journey begins with play. Investing in safe and inclusive spaces for children to remain active is crucial for their health and future.

According to Deepa Rai, Media Officer of the Bhutan Football Federation, sports sharpen the mind, enhance decision-making, and instill discipline. These attributes help children manage their time better and focus on their studies.

Building a Foundation for Future Generations 🌱

Grassroots programs are essential for nurturing young talent. Starting with children aged six to twelve helps identify and develop skills early, fostering discipline and civic values. This approach ensures that football and other sports remain vibrant and accessible for future generations.

The celebration was organized by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, the Bhutan Football Federation, and UNICEF. It reaffirmed UNICEF's commitment to ensuring every child in Bhutan can exercise their right to play.

Looking Ahead: A Call for Action 🔮

Participants called for greater investment in safe play spaces and school-based physical activities. Such investment is not just about sports; it's an investment in children's health, wellbeing, and future.

As Bhutan continues to evolve, embracing the power of play will be crucial in nurturing well-rounded, healthy, and happy citizens. The International Day of Play serves as a reminder of the joy and benefits that come from simply playing, learning, and growing together.
